Defendor-Identity

"Defendor",The story tells of a mentally-ill man who takes the persona of a superhero named Defendor on a quest to find his arch enemy, Captain Industry. And knowing this from his grandfather before he died. The movie showed a bit of sadness seeing as Defendor was mentally-ill, but trying to do good and fighting crime. In the end he finds Captain Industry, but he never figured out that his grandfather meant the industry itself.

Daughter of Keltoum

The setting was very dry and intensely hot atmosphere in the night time it seemed cold. As they made it to the hotel the setting changed into a nice looking place the facade of the building.

The Overture

The movie had a quite elaborate setting because it switched from time to time...literally. It took the story from Sorn, the main character, bed-ridden in the 1940s and making a series between his time around in the 1940s and when he was younger in the late 19th century. The lighting had a high contrast and low saturation type so the colors where very bad quality in a decent way. Sorn had a close relationship to his brother until his brothers death and Sorn's father had feared that the samething might happen to Sorn if he continued in his brothers footsteps by playing the Ranad ek in a wrongful way.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape

Gilbert goes through shame when his mentally disabled brother is taken to jail because his habits of climbing up the water tower were taken lightly too many times already. Another time is when he leaves his brother in the bathtub by himself and when he comes back he’s still in there and his family is upset and makes him feel irresponsible and upset as well. The other time is when he hits his brother and leaves hesitating to come back, but does come back and face his family. Gilbert show’s loyalty by taking care of his family, working and putting his own life on hold.

My Sister's Keeper

In this film Anna a young girl knows she has been born a genetic match for her older sister Kate. Being a match to her she keeps her alive. Anna has to go through shame and tell her parent’s she intends to sue them for the rights of her body. Another scene where there is shame is when she goes to see the attorney and has to explain that she wants to sue her parent's. The last time shame is shown in this film when they are in the court for a hearing and she is speaking against her parents. Anna shows loyalty by going through with suing her parent’s and the uncomfortable feeling of being with them at home while they are arranging the hearing. Giving Kate her wishes of letting her go because she does not want to live any longer.

A Little Princess

This is a film during the time of World War 1. It takes place in India and New York. Sara a young girl living in India has a great life, until the moment her father tells her that he has been enlisted to fight in World War 1 and she will be attending a school in New York while he is away, the light from the sun coming in her room becomes real bright and moving in this scene. While she is in New York she is informed that her father has been killed in war, so she is made a servant. There is a scene where it becomes real dark and is pouring rain while she is being chased by police and ends up inside the neighbor’s house. She then finds her father realizing that he is alive, but he does not recognize her. (Setting and Lighting)

The Overture

The overture is about a Sorn, a Thai man who plays the ranad. it switches back and forth from his childhood to his older self in World War II

A ClockWork Orange

This is film is based in a futuristic Britain. The main character lives at home with his parents and is the leader of a gang of four men. His gang helps out this chick from being raped by their rival gang in an old abandoned play house. The next scene with the gang is out side a lady's house. They are planing to break in and steal all her money. The main character doesn't expect his gang to be waiting outside and smash a milk bottle over his head and take the money for them selves. The police arrive and arrest him for the murder of that lady and a man they paralyzed who's wife they also raped. The police take him to prison and offer him special treatment. The special treatment renders him incapable to do anything sexual. The thought of anything sexual makes him throw up. They eventually fully "cure" him which they actually reverse the effect the drugs had on him.

The Overture

This film is about a man, when he is both young and old, who has a passion for playing an instrument. The film takes the viewer through the man's life and shows the viewer the man's troubles and successes. The lighting is mainly yellows and blues.

The overture difficulties

The only thing that was hard to understand the movie is that when they the main character from an old man to a young teenager once and awhile talking about his life story.

Treatment

My story will be about a couple of friends and one day they go to downtown to see a movie and its dark out, then out of nowhere bums start chasing them down throughout the night and the whole story is them trying to get away from the bums. My characters will be named Jorge, Carlos, Isaiah, Gabriel, Christian, and me. The setting is in downtown the whole story.

The Notebook

"The Notebook"  is a story about young love, and passion, a young man by the name of Noel falls in love with Ally, who is from a wealthy family, throughout the movie, the audience is able to see and witness not in person of course but in the film the strength of true love, and hard work people put into it. The film is a perfect example of identity and family, Ally has to deal with her families wealth, and her obligation to marry someone from the same standards. Ally goes through identity changes, when she has to choose between a wealthy man that's perfect for her family's taste, and Noel who's very poor, but thats where her hearts at. Ally is able to be two different people with those two different men.

Lighting in The Notebook is very bright and happy, the first couple of scene's are bright and vibrant colors. However the scene where they lost saw each other when they were young, the lighting is very dark, almost looks like if only a candle was on. The Notebook is a great example of Family and Identity..!!!

The Overture: Lighting and Setting

The Overture was based in Siam, Thailand. Overall, the setting was pretty bright, which I guess gave a sense of satisfaction of Sorn; I also noticed that when Khanin came into the story, the lighting became a little darker; like when the two were having a showdown and the sky became cloudy with wild winds and rain. Also, after the showdown, Sorn chained himself in a a small dark room with little lighting (the only lighting being from candles).

the overture setting

In the movie Sorn was a boy who had a gift of making music with his hands. That's until his brother died so that's when his life changed and decided to do what his brother did and that's making great music to the people of Thailand.

Daughter of Keltoum

Daughter of Keltoum takes place in Algeria and is about a young women who is in search of her mother and wants to kill her. There was an interesting lady who followed the main character when she went to find her mother. The daughter has been holding a grudge against her mother for giving her up for adoption when she was a small child. At the end of the film, the daughter finds out the crazy lady she has been traveling with is her real mother.

The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo

This is a dark film that captures the sick nature of what people are capable of doing. Lisbeth Salander is a frequent smoker and a genius computer hacker. She helps a reporter, Michael Blomkvist, int the investigation of a 40 year old murder. Murder is a huge factor in setting the scene. In fact, its basicaly the whole movie. The two of them figure out that there has been a series of murder that lead up to the main one of the investigation. All of which haven't been solved and the police have given up on. The deeper they get into this investigation the more danger surrounds them. They twist the story in a way you couldn't imagine by throwing everything you assumed out the window. The camera angles are a huge factor in this film by really showing in depth shots. The film really exploits the minds of the disturbed and will send chills through your spine.

The Overture

The Overture takes place entirely in Thailand. This movie likes jumping from the past to the "present" and back for a couple of scenes. It switches from Sorn as a young adult to Sorn as an elderly ranad ek master. Because of this, it's hard to figure out what the time period is. It's only until the scenes with the older Sorn that we find out some of the scenes are set during World War II, when Thailand is under Japanese rule. One interesting thing to note is that the scenes with the younger Sorn have brighter and more colorful lighting than the scenes with the elder Sorn. It contrasts the younger Sorn building up his potential against the grittiness the war brings, especially with the restrictions on traditional culture.

The Overture (Ellis Carroll Identity Remix)

In many movies, a strong recurring theme is that a persons life is hugely effected by a certain moment in their lives. This is no exception in the overture, where the finding of a Ranad Ek changes the life of a then tiny Sorn, fating him to become the greatest Ranad Ek player in Thailand. Honestly i don't agree with this theme too much and usually dislike movies that are based entirely on it, but this movie is a exception. Sorn lives his life pursuing his music relentlessly, and The Overture does a good job of expressing his passion and love for his countries native music.

Doughter of Keltoum

The film takes place in Algeria and is spoken in french with American subtitles. The plot twists and turn and flips and flops and trips all over itself. I ENJOY FOREIGN FILMS

keltoums daughter lighting

The lighting in the movie is mostly sunny showing on how the girl keeps on going to find her mother who abandoned her and she keeps fighting until the end and realizes that her real mother went crazy to have her baby back.

What's eating Gilbert Grape--Shame and loyalty

In the film "What's eating Gilbert Grape" there were many parts that showed both shame and loyalty. Seeing Gilbert could not get away from his family he wanted to leave and wanted a big change.

Scenes of Shame:

1. one scene that shows a bit of shame was when his mentally challenged brother climbed the water tower and seeing that it happened a lot he couldn't help but feel irresponsible for not taking care of his brother.

2. Another scene is when Gilbert hits his brother and runs away as if he wasn't going to come back just like his brother leaving the place. When he made up his mind to come back he was too ashamed to show his face to his family.

3. Another is when they take their mother to go pick up Gilbert's brother and everyone was looking at the family's mother and seeing how overweight she was the whole family was ashamed and even the mother was of herself

Scene of Loyalty

1. One scene of loyalty is where Gilbert is always there for his brother through everything and make sure no one does anything to him.

2. Gilbert never goes to Food Land and promises to stay loyal to the store he works at.

Daughter of Keltoum: Setting

Daughter of Keltoum is set in Algeria in a barren, dry wasteland.

Disturbia: Lighting and Setting

While watching the documentary, the director said it was intended to be a average teen romance movie, with a good twist; a serial killer living next door to Kale, the main character. The setting in Disturbia was a suburban neighborhood in California (the town/city isn't mentioned). Lighting played an important part in the movie; having some scenes of worthy mention. When Kale looks into his dead father's study, the moderate amount of sunlight entering through the window gives a warm feel with a vintage look (his father being a writer). Also, when Kale is looking for his mother in the killer's basement, it is very dark with a small amount of colorless light, portraying fear.

Daughter of Keltoum (Ellis Carroll Setting Remix)

The setting of the Daughter of Keltoum takes place in Algeria in a very desolate, dry, dead place.

Winters Bone (Ellis Carroll Lighting-&-Setting Remix)

The film winters bone uses the setting and lighting heavily to express what the main character (Ree Dolly) is feeling at any given moment. The film takes place in the Appalachian mountains in the winter season. So with almost no effort everything is almost instantly dark and depressing. The constant heavy fog, and tall ever present pine trees help the audience identify with the way Ree feels trapped by the place she lives in. The only time the mood ever lightens is when she is with her brothers. But the only thing that really changes is that it usually gets brighter. the pine trees and the fog tend to stay. When Ree goes on the hunt for her dad who abandoned the family, something very interesting happens with the setting. Whenever she finds something terrible about her father, or whenever she gets in trouble with the people who knew him, the setting is very open and light. kind of a reversal of the normal. every time she seems to be on to something, the setting gets open and light, only to be shut down by the people who live there. this is an interesting method that i haven't seen in many other movies, and is very effective.

Grape

Whats eating Gilbert Grape is about a dis functional family that consists of an overweight mother a mentally ill brother and two sisters that nag a lot. The movie is about Gilbert and how his life is living with his family. Gilbert works at grocery store that has very few customers.............their embarrassed of their fat mom because shes so big. She Dies. She Burns

American History X, Family and lighting

American History X showed a example of family, The movie talks about two brothers and the older brother being a fatherly figure towards the family ever since their father died. But the older brother joins the Neo-Nazi movement and goes to jail for murdering black gang members. The younger brother follows his older brothers footsteps and joins the Neo-Nazi. But as his older brother gets out of jail he tries to get his brother out of the neo-nazi movement and showing what the wrongs are in the group he's in. The lighting in the movie was mostly shpown in black and white showing the past and how the older brother joined the movement and went to jail. It's until then that it goes to color and the lighting then became darker and had a noise effect to show some confusion on what's going on.

Angela's Ashes (Ellis Carroll Light and Location Remix)

Angela's ashes uses a constant stream of dark, foreboding light, tight, claustrophobic camera angles, and an extreme almost ridiculous amount of water and blue light. All these things come together to make a very dark and depressing feeling which fit the narration and story of the movie perfectly. Most scenes involving the family as a whole, take place in tiny, dark, wet rooms that that they call home. These scenes are very small, and dark, and display the lack of wealth the family has, and how dirty the location they live in. Another recurring theme in the movie is the fathers storytelling. Every time, he tells a story to any of the boys, the shots seem to get a little larger, the locations seem to get bigger. Showing the love for the fathers storytelling, how when stories are told, everything gets a little better. But at the same time, the locations are large, but oppressive. when the father and Frank are walking along the hill, the camera angle is large, but there is a heavy fog in the background. The camera angle tells us how, no matter what stories the father tells, they can't belittle the fact that he has a huge drinking problem that is ruining the family.

Spiderman1-3 -identity and family

1.identity-Peter Parker does not know what to if he wants to be Spider-man
2.identity- When he choice between the dark and like side
3.identity-When Peter tells Harry that his father hated him
1.family-When Peter finds out that sandman killed his uncle he goes out and finds him to get revenge
2.family-Aunt May try to do whatever she can to keep the family in the bank seen
3.family-When Harry does everything he can to live up his father excitations

Nosferatu

Nosferatu is about a Vampire that kills people.

Dazed and Confused

This film focuses on the last day of school for graduating seniors and incoming freshmen. The film takes the viewer through the lives of many of these characters. Some characters are trying to find their place in the world, while others are trying to shoot them down. During one scene, at a party in the middle of the night, the lighting is 'hazey' which shows the mood of the party. Another scene is lit purely but the moon's light which shows the relaxing end to the night.

Angela's Ashes the various lighting in scenes

The lighting in "Angela's Ashes" was had a sadden and poverty looking place, they did a great job with the lighting because it was quite convincing, since the family was poverty it showed how heavy the times they went through. Some scenes showed some sense of a joyful outlook, but then the rain and the darkening of the lighting was very clear that something indeed is going wrong. It wasn't until the end of the movie when Frank went to America were the lighting went from gloomy to a light happy setting.

Penelope

Penelope is about a young women, Penelope, who was put under a curse and must find true love in order to break the curse. Penelope not only finds true love and breaks the curse, but also finds happiness within herself. Part of the film takes place outside during the night. During this scene, the lighting consists of Christmas-type lights, street lamps, and the moon light. The lighting helps show the feeling at the moment in the film, which is confusion and panic.

Garden State

This film is about a man, living in Las Angeles, who comes home to New Jersey for his mother's funeral. While home, he connects with old friends, and falls in love. Garden State takes the viewer through the journey of a depressed, heavily-medicated man who finds happiness where he least expects it. There is a lot of 'dark' scenes where it is raining, or the lighting is dark. This lighting creates a calm, and somewhat depressing, feeling that shows the viewer what the main character is feeling.

The Curious Case of Benjamin Button setting and lighting

Every scene in this movie was thought out and made to through you back in time and see the world of aging backwards while the world around him moves forward. The lighting in the movie showed every expression and to make each emotion pop and lets its audience feel what he is feeling. The setting showed the evolution in the world and showed the effect over time.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape: Shame and Loyalty

Shame: When "Mama" went outside her house after 7 years to get her son Ernie out of prison; then people outside the prison, such as kids, laugh and stare at her.

Shame: The fact that the kids didn't like playing with their dad XD Or, the fact that the lady wanted to cheat on her husband with Gilbert (she was ashamed of her husband)

Shame: Gilbert burned down the house his dead mother was in so she wouldn't have to be removed with a crane, which was the only way to remove her so she wouldn't be a "joke."

Shame: When Gilbert bought a cake at the supermarket and departing, his boss was outside, disappointed.

Loyalty: The fact that Gilbert was the man of the house; he worked overtime; he took his brother to work with him, he promised not to "hurt his mother anymore," etc.

Loyalty: Gilbert would, time after time, get Ernie down from the water tower; when the kids would make fun of him for doing that, Gilbert told them not to touch him.

Loyalty: Gilbert took his brother with him across the country, instead of sticking him with his sisters.

Loyalty and Shame in What's Eating Gilbert Grape

Gilbert expresses his loyalty to his family in many ways. Gilbert helps throw Arnie his 18th birthday party, goes to the supermarket to get Arnie's cake, even though he said he would never go to the supermarket, and Gilbert takes Momma to town to "free Arnie." Gilbert also expresses shame in many ways. He burns down the house because the family is ashamed of their mother. Gilbert expresses shame when he goes into the supermarket, and when he repeatedly has to get Arnie down from the water tower.

What's Eating Gilbert Grape: Loyalty and Shame

Scenes of Loyalty:
  1. Since Mr. Grape is dead and the oldest son left the family, Gilbert is the only son left to be the man of the house. He works in a grocery store to support his family, and he is the sole caretaker of Arnie, his mentally retarded younger brother. He doesn't let other people take care of Arnie, even his sisters.
  2. A minor but interesting scene of loyalty is seen at the Lamson's Grocery store Gilbert works at. His employers are worried about going out of business because a newer, bigger store called FoodLand opened in town, drawing away their customers. Gilbert remarks he would never go to FoodLand and betray their store. However, this becomes a bit awkward later in the movie. Gilbert goes there to buy a replacement cake for Arnie's birthday party only to be spotted by his boss, despite FoodLand being the only place to buy cakes.
  3. Mr. Carver is very loyal to his wife Betty, despite not knowing that she's cheating on him with Gilbert. He doesn't even know that Gilbert seems to "spend more time" than necessary in making grocery deliveries to the Carvers' home. Mr. Carver even considers giving Gilbert a job.
Scenes of Shame:
  1. Any scene concerning Bonnie Grape portrays a deep amount of shame. The most effective is when Arnie climbs the water tower for the last time. He succeeds in reaching the top, but is brought down by the local police force and gets thrown into prison. At hearing this news, Bonnie goes directly to the police station to demand Arnie back. The thing is, she has never left the house or even the living room sofa in seven years. When the family brings Arnie home, a crowd gathers around them to see the behemoth Bonnie has become. One of the onlookers even takes a picture of the family as they leave.
  2. Gilbert accidentally leaves Arnie in the bath by himself, resulting in Arnie developing a fear of water. During the course of the movie, Arnie avoids taking a bath, becoming dirtier and dirtier in each scene. When the rest of the family can't take it anymore, Gilbert tries to force Arnie into the bathtub, with little success. Frustrated, he starts hitting Arnie. When he regains his composure, Gilbert is ashamed and drives off away from the house. Arnie tries to follow him, only to go to Becky's trailer. His disappearance triggers his sisters to find him.
  3. The aforementioned scene with Bonnie's shame could be a contributing factor to her death. After Arnie's birthday party, she waddles up to her bedroom despite not moving from the couch in seven years. She ends up dying in her sleep, and the children don't have any idea of what to do with her body. Amy is especially worried because calling the funeral home would expose people to Bonnie's morbid size. Gilbert's solution is to move all their stuff out of the house and burn it down.

Angela's Ashes

1.

2. The father walking away in the tunnel and going into the light made it show that he was leaving and never coming back. The rain was the washing away the sins of his father and showing that his problems. The dark and shades were to used to focus on the one actor and his emotions

3. His family shaped him in the way of his actions. For example his hard work ethic was shaped by his family that he had little mad his strive for more and made him want to better in life. Even the worst actions were molded by his father and showed his father was still close no matter how far he was.

4. Being happy is a general emotions and could be seen before it happens. But when a person has a problem and its solution are different in there own way and the solution can not be seen because each person can feel there own way about the way the deal with there problems.

Lighting and Setting in Angela's Ashes

The lighting in the film is very dark and depressing. During the funeral scenes, the characters are all wearing dark clothing and the background is dark while their white faces stand out. It is constantly raining in the film and there is frequently dark clothing and dark backgrounds.

Angelas Ashes

In the middle of the movie when frank started to matured his mom realized that he was turning into his own father who she hated because of his drinking problems and also not finding a job.

Angelas Ashes

At first you see the dad stumbling down the street singing. Its darker and kind of gloomy with the reflection of the moon. The second scene they are using a blue light filter and showing them picking up coal. The colors suggest that that they aren't happy with having to do so. In the last scene you see Frank on the boat to New York and the director is using a yellow light filter to send happy tone and imply a newer better life for Frank.

Angela's Ashes

1. In the first scene the dad comes home drunk. It is very late and dark while he's going up the stairs, but the light from the moon came in through the windows to light up the scene. The second scene was when they had to pick up the coal from the ground, off the road. It was real cloudy and gray. The last scene was at the end, outside their home when they were watching the eclipse it was real dark and bright while he was reflecting his life.
2. There was rain, and was very cloudy and gray throughout the film, giving the feeling of pain and sorrow within the scenes.

Get those questions answered -- we are moving on!

Film People:
I'm still looking for your posts. Kudos to Frank and Jasmine for thoughtful contributions. Remember: the more you think and write, the more you'll get out of this class!

As we finish "Cautiva" tomorrow, please reflect on the issue of identity and family. We will be discussing that tomorrow.

I also be showing you a short video that covers camera angles and give you an online glossary that covers them (so you can refer back to them). As we move through this course, I'll be adding to your knowledge base, but as we go, consider what we have covered already.

Don't forget to be watching films on your own! This is REQUIRED!

Angela's Ashes

First Scene: In the beginning of the film, the father of Frank, comes home drunk, and his singing and the setting is in an ally, the lighting is very dark and the little light that can be seen is from the moon, and the ground is wet, from a long storm.
Second Scene: In the second scene after the women that collects debts dies, Frank goes to the w omens house steals the debt records book, and throws it in the river. The choice in stetting from the directors perspective was amazing, in that scene it was Frank alone, it showed a sense of freedom from his part. For lighting, the sky was still gray, the scene looked like after a rainy day.
Third Scene: The third scene would have to be that last scene of the film when Frank arrives back to America, the lighting in the film is brighter, more color is shown, the light really highlights the Statue of Liberty.

The scene that i chose was when the father wanted to go to London again and then franck wanted to follow him and the last time he see his dad leave for good was when he goes under a bridge and is gone for good.

Angelas Ashes

1. One scene that has some lighting and color is when Frank is on the boat to New York and the ocean is a goldish color and the lighting in the scene is bright and sort of gives a sense of accomplishment. Another scene is when Frank is walking home and the scene seems cold, sad, and discouraging. The final scene i noticed is when the family goes to church, the scene looks like a happy place to be, because you can get away from their house and go somewhere were they can have a bit of relief from there troubled lives.

2. Some Symbols and Motifs in this movie was like the rain, their was rain in every sad scene or in any scene that try to show a sort of sadness or gloomy feel. Their was also the very little sunlight in some scenes like at their home their hardly ever any sunshine, throughout the movie their is hardly any sunlight.

3.I think that Franks family shaped his identity in a negative yet also in a positive way because his mom taught him in the movie to appreciate what you have and, don't worry about what you don't have. They also shaped it in negative way because his father was an alcoholic and he always went home drunk and set a bad example.

4.I think every family is unhappy in their own way when there unhappy because everyone has different problems.

- Francisco Arellano

Angela's Ashes [Questions]

Alan Parker, director of Angela's Ashes, has unique choices in setting, lighting, and color. Throughout the whole movie the lighting is usually a gray-blue color. Bright lighting or coloring close to nonexistant, only for important details. This is used to emphasize the melancholic atmosphere of the movie. One of the most prominent instances of coloring and lighting is the ending scene, where Frank arrives in America. The ending scene averts the overall gloominess by casting a golden light on the seas to America in order to show a fresh new start. The ocean looks like a sea of gold, symbolizing the prosperity and new times Frank is headed towards to. Another scene was when Frank threw the money lender's records into the river. The lighting in that scene was slightly brighter, conveying a sense of freedom.

There are many recurring motifs in Angela's Ashes. Parker's first noticeable recurring motif is the constant use of water. No matter where the family is, it is either always raining or the sky is covered in fog or rain clouds. The director chooses to use water as a means of washing away "impurities", like the debt collector's records and the father's drinking habits. The director also likes to take multiple shots of the lanes. The lanes are extremely narrow and not a clean place to live near.

Angela's Ashes

Lighting is a very important aspect to a movie, it sets the mood, contributes to the setting, and shows how the person in the film is feeling. In the film "Angela's Ashes" Author: Frank McCourt, the family in the film go through many trials, and pain, they are very weighed down do to there economical problems. The lighting in the film do a great job in portraying that pain. The lighting in "Angela's Ashes" is fantastic, it's very bloomy, raniny, gray, there are no bright colorful colors. It's very dark.

Angela's Ashes: A First Look

Angela's Ashes is a depressing film. The characters go through many hardships and pain, and the mood of the film is established through this pain. The director usually uses a gray-blue lighting and a lack of bright colors to accentuate on the gloomy atmosphere of the film. Bright lighting is rarely used. It is only to emphasize on important details, such as the coffin of one of the main character's siblings. There is always some form of precipitation in the film, whether it be rain, fog, or just storm clouds. This type of weather also helps cement the gloom.

Lighting & Setting (AA)

The lighting in this movie is really dark and mellow. It sort of makes you sad and glommy. This film is pretty interesting, we haven't finished it yet, so im excited to finish it.

Let's do it, people!

First off, thanks to Nate for getting our blog up and running.
Now...USE IT! Remember that you need to post ALL OF YOUR ASSIGNMENTS HERE, including your independent film-watching and your duo/trio film choices for each two-week unit.

However, if you have problems getting on the blog, you will need to send your assignments to me directly at lusiamitchell@gmail.com. I'd hate for anyone NOT to get credit because they didn't post here or to me. However, this is a paper-free assignment class, so you need to step up and get your work out for your first progress report grade (which, I need to remind you, is rapidly approaching).

Just a reminder: Please read the Frank McCourt obituary that I handed out today and prepare to discuss (and then write) about how the insights into his life and work are either effectively or unsuccessfully portrayed in the film. As I stated, this is not about "I like it -- it sucks" but rather, about effectiveness/success in communication with audience via the various themes, conventions, and techniques you are now learning and will continue to learn.

LET'S HAVE FUN WITH THIS!

Lighting in Nosferatu

Lighting is a very important aspect of film. Lighting can create the effect that it is nighttime during the daytime. Lighting can also convey mood and emotion

1st assignment

1. The lighting in Nosferatu was very interesting because you couldn't tell if it was night only when it was day, but the only way you can kind of tell it was dark is because the clothing became darker. The very setting showed how the person moved to a place to another by showing how he traveled to Count Dracula's house.

Nosferatu

The film made the movie with limited production in the camera. They used bright lights to express the actors face. The setting provided a backdrop for the shadows and made the illusion of turning day and made it seem like it was night time. Since the camera could only capture brightly lit settings the actors had to make overly expressed facial features and made there mood over the top to be able to be caught on camera.

Reading Film: An Overview Summary

Movies are a visual medium, meaning viewers get information from looking at they way the movie looks. There are a variety of elements filmmakers use to convey information about the characters and setting of the movie. Social status, personalities, and lifestyles are shown through the characters' appearance, from their clothing to their makeup. Relationships can be seen through camera angles, and the camera itself can become a character's point of view. Filmmakers use editing to create suspense and excitement, while dialogue give information such as plot, character motivations and personalities, and location. Music helps to bring emotion and mood to the surface. Though we take movies for granted, a lot of time and effort is spent on these subtle but powerful details in order to bring together a compelling story. I thought this article was very interesting, although I already knew much of the information.

Setting & Lighting in Nosferatu

Nosferatu uses lighting to emphasize certain parts in the movie. For example, the director uses bright lighting on a character to bring the viewer's attention to that character. Bright lighting may be used on a character's face to focus on their facial expressions, whereas darker lighting is used to direct attention away what the director deems unimportant in the scene, such as the background. Dark lighting is also used to give a sense of time. Since it was not possible to shoot at night, the movie is shot so that shadows are visible, which creates a sense of nighttime.

Reading Film: An Overview

Movies are a visual medium. Composition, shape, line, and color in the picture frame suggest emotions and ideas. Camera angles and different shots show characters' relationships to other characters. Filmmakers use editing, visual effects, and sound to add excitement and suspense to the picture. Sound effects add humor, suspense, and realism to scenes. Music conveys emotion, mood, and character in ways that imagery and dialogue can't.

Nosferatu

Lighting in Nosferatu is an interesting thing. Black and white mixed with old low quality film makes for quite the lighting challenge. The directors use a plethora of different techniques for things as simple as differentiating day from night. because the film was very low tech, they could not shoot at night. a couple of ways they showed the time of day was with shadows. to convey night, they would shoot in a way that the shadows would be off screen. or they would turn the streetlights on in the middle of the day. the setting is very interesting. once again low technology leads to interesting effects. for example, the filming might be taking place in a house in the middle of the city, but as long as you don't show whats out the window, they can just cut in a picture of a field and were forced to assume that the house in in the prairie.

READING FILM ARTICLE

The reading film article was interesting to me,but i already do most of what it said to do when i watch movies. so it wasn't anything new to me.

Nosferatu

The director uses the light to contrast what he/she wants you to focus on. For example, if a person is in a dark room wearing dark clothing and a pale face, the director wants you to focus on the persons facial expressions and vice versa.

Tim Burton's Corpse Bride [2005]

Directed by Tim Burton & Mike Johnson

This movie takes place in Victorian times. One setting is a small, unnamed village in the land of the living, while the other is a world filled with the dead. Like early films, everything in the village from the sky to the people are in black, white, or shades of gray. It's also a bit hard to figure out the time of day. On the other hand, the land of the dead is colorful and energetic, becoming a foil to the dullness of the world of the living. This contrast in lighting symbolizes the types of society the two worlds are: the land of the living is drab, rigid, and repressive, while the underworld is vibrant and more lively. Another great example of lighting is used during the scene where Victor meets the Corpse Bride at nighttime. He tries to escape from her, but as the Corpse Bride approaches him, the moonlight provides backlighting, nearly covering the bride in silhouette and presenting her as a ghostly, supernatural creature.
