The Overture

The Overture takes place entirely in Thailand. This movie likes jumping from the past to the "present" and back for a couple of scenes. It switches from Sorn as a young adult to Sorn as an elderly ranad ek master. Because of this, it's hard to figure out what the time period is. It's only until the scenes with the older Sorn that we find out some of the scenes are set during World War II, when Thailand is under Japanese rule. One interesting thing to note is that the scenes with the younger Sorn have brighter and more colorful lighting than the scenes with the elder Sorn. It contrasts the younger Sorn building up his potential against the grittiness the war brings, especially with the restrictions on traditional culture.
