Lighting in Nosferatu is an interesting thing. Black and white mixed with old low quality film makes for quite the lighting challenge. The directors use a plethora of different techniques for things as simple as differentiating day from night. because the film was very low tech, they could not shoot at night. a couple of ways they showed the time of day was with shadows. to convey night, they would shoot in a way that the shadows would be off screen. or they would turn the streetlights on in the middle of the day. the setting is very interesting. once again low technology leads to interesting effects. for example, the filming might be taking place in a house in the middle of the city, but as long as you don't show whats out the window, they can just cut in a picture of a field and were forced to assume that the house in in the prairie.
