Reading Film: An Overview

Movies are a visual medium. Composition, shape, line, and color in the picture frame suggest emotions and ideas. Camera angles and different shots show characters' relationships to other characters. Filmmakers use editing, visual effects, and sound to add excitement and suspense to the picture. Sound effects add humor, suspense, and realism to scenes. Music conveys emotion, mood, and character in ways that imagery and dialogue can't.
